AI visibility study of 10 major Russian banks and FinTech companies: who leads in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, and other AI systems. March 2026 data.
We conducted an AI visibility study of 10 major Russian banks and FinTech companies using geoscout.pro platform data. Monitoring covered 8 AI providers (ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Grok, Perplexity, and Yandex with Alice), 241 AI responses for March 2026. Results break conventional assumptions about financial sector leadership.
About GEO Scout's methodology: Unlike monitoring tools that query model APIs, GEO Scout captures responses from the actual web interfaces of AI products — exactly what a real user sees, including citations, widgets, and search-grounded answers. This is why the platform can cover Russian and Google surfaces (Yandex with Alice, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overview) that have no usable public API. Monitoring parameters:
- Date: March 23, 2026
- AI providers: 8 (ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Grok, Perplexity, Yandex with Alice)
- Total responses: 241
- Prompts: commercial and informational queries about banks, loans, deposits, transfers, business banking, debit and credit cards
- Metrics: mention rate, average position, Share of Voice, recommendation rate, positive sentiment, domain citation
- Data collection: UI-scraping of the real consumer interfaces — not API calls — so responses reflect what an actual user sees, including search grounding and citations

Two things jump out: the massive gap between the top 4 and everyone else — Alfa-Bank at 78% versus Gazprombank at 45%. And Sberbank is only fourth. Russia's largest bank by assets and clients trails Alfa-Bank by 11 percentage points.
Key Insight: Business Size ≠ AI Ranking
This is perhaps the study's most important finding. By traditional metrics — client count, assets, market share — Sberbank is the undisputed leader. But in AI search, different rules apply.
78.42% vs 67.63%Alfa-Bank outperforms Sberbank — Russia's largest bank — by 11% in mention frequency across 8 AI providers (241 responses, March 2026). Business size doesn't determine AI ranking.
AI systems form responses based not on company size but on: digital presence, expert reviews, structured data, content freshness, and link profile.
Alfa-Bank and T-Bank are historically stronger in digital marketing. T-Bank (formerly Tinkoff) was built as a digital-first bank with no branches — all client experience is in the app and website. This creates a powerful digital footprint that AI picks up.
T-Bank: Best Position in the Industry
T-Bank ranks second by mention rate (75.52%) but first by average position: 2.44. When AI mentions T-Bank, it places it among the first two or three recommendations.
For comparison: Sberbank's average position is 4.17. T-Bank is mentioned almost as often but placed significantly higher.
T-Bank in ChatGPT: Record Numbers

- Domain citation: 26.7% — every fourth response links to tbank.ru

Alfa-Bank: Consistent Coverage Leader
Alfa-Bank tops the ranking through consistently high presence across virtually all AI providers:

No other bank shows such consistency. Alfa-Bank has no "failing" providers — it's present everywhere.
Recommendation rate: 2.07% — the industry maximum. In FinTech context, this is normal — AI is extremely cautious with direct financial product recommendations.
Sberbank: The Largest Bank Paradox
Sberbank is fourth with a 67.63% mention rate. But the most surprising fact isn't the overall ranking — it's the failure in specific providers.
Yandex Poorly Knows Sberbank
Yandex with Alice mentions Sberbank in only 36.7% of responses. For comparison: Perplexity and Google AI Mode — 96.7% each.

This is a paradox: a Russian AI provider knows Russia's largest bank worse than Western AI. With 88 million Yandex Alice users, losing two-thirds of potential mentions is expensive.
This kind of cross-provider gap is only visible because GEO Scout monitors the real Yandex Search interface — not an API that doesn't exist. Most Western GEO monitoring tools have no access to Yandex or Alice at all, so Russian banks operating with those tools are effectively flying blind on the provider their customers use most.
Average Position: 4.17
Even Tochka — a niche business bank with 3.5x lower mention rate — is placed higher in AI responses than Sberbank. AI puts Sberbank at the end of the list because it evaluates relevance and digital presence quality.
Provider Map: Who Knows Whom
Grok: Unexpected Favorites
Grok shows MTS Bank at 71% — while its overall average is just 30.29%. Grok clearly has its own "worldview" of the Russian banking market.
Claude: Blind Spots
Claude shows the most notable blind spots: MTS Bank: 0% — Claude doesn't mention MTS Bank at all. Zero visibility. Despite being part of the MTS ecosystem with millions of clients.
Perplexity and Google AI Mode: Best Market Knowledge
Both show Sberbank at 96.7% and Alfa-Bank at 93.3%. These providers use current web search for responses, so their market knowledge is broader and more accurate.
Tochka: Small Bank, Big Position
Tochka closes the top 10 with 21.58% mention rate — 3.5x lower than Alfa-Bank. But its average position is 2.75 — higher than VTB (3.36) and Sberbank (4.17).
When AI does mention Tochka, it places it second or third. This shows high relevance in its niche: Tochka is a bank for entrepreneurs, and on business banking queries AI recommends it among the first.

Recommendation Rate: Why AI Won't Recommend Banks
Maximum recommendation rate is 2.07% (Alfa-Bank). For comparison: SaaS leaders get 15-20%.
AI is cautious with financial products. Instead of "I recommend Alfa-Bank," AI says "popular options include Alfa-Bank, T-Bank, VTB, Sberbank." That's listing, not recommending.
For banks: mention rate and position are more meaningful metrics than recommendation rate.
What Banks Should Do: GEO Optimization Recommendations
For Top 4 (Alfa, T-Bank, VTB, Sberbank)
- Close weak providers. Sberbank critically needs to boost Yandex visibility (36.7%).
- Work on position. T-Bank at 2.44 vs Sberbank at 4.17 — expert content and comparisons help.
- Build domain citation. T-Bank and Alfa-Bank proved 20-26% citation in ChatGPT is achievable.
For Banks 5-10
- Niche strategy. Tochka shows the way: 21% mention rate but position 2.75.
