AI Visibility Benchmarks by Niche: What Counts as a Good Result in 2026
Industry benchmarks for AI visibility in the Russian market: average Mention Rate, Share of Voice, position by niche (finance, e-commerce, EdTech, tourism, hosting). Realistic KPIs for small, medium, and large businesses.
Every marketer who starts tracking AI visibility asks one question: "Is a 30% Mention Rate good or bad?" Without context, the number is meaningless. 30% in e-commerce, where leaders show 97%, is a weak result. 30% in tourism, where dozens of players split AI attention, puts you in the top 5.
Benchmarks solve this problem. They provide a reference point: here's the average level for your niche, here's the leader level, here's the minimum below which AI doesn't know about you. Based on GEO Scout data on 716 brands across 5 niches, we compiled the first public AI visibility benchmarks for the Russian market.
Why AI Visibility Benchmarks Matter
In SEO, benchmarks have long been standardized: first position CTR — 28-34%, average load time — under 2.5 seconds, e-commerce bounce rate — 20-45%. Marketers know what to aim for.
In GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), such reference points didn't exist until now. Brands launch monitoring, see numbers — and don't understand if they're good or bad. Without benchmarks, you cannot:
- Set realistic KPIs — goals like "increase Mention Rate to 80%" are unrealistic for a niche brand
- Evaluate progress — growth from 15% to 25% may be an excellent result or stagnation
- Prioritize efforts — if your SoV is already above average, focus should shift to position or sentiment
- Justify budget — leadership needs numbers, not "we're working on AI visibility"
Methodology: How We Calculated Benchmarks
The data is based on the GEO Scout study (March 2026):
- 716 brands across 5 niches: EdTech, E-commerce, FinTech, tourism, hosting
- 9 AI providers: ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overview, Grok, Perplexity, YandexGPT
- Daily monitoring of commercial queries in Russian
- 6 key metrics: Mention Rate, Avg Position, Share of Voice, Recommendation Rate, Positive Rate, Domain Citation
For each niche, we identified three levels: leaders (top 3), middle segment (4th-10th place), and tail (11th+ place). Full data in the study overview.
Mention Rate Benchmarks by Niche
Mention Rate is the foundational metric: in what percentage of AI responses the brand is mentioned. The first thing to measure.
| Niche | Leader (top 1) | Top-3 average | Middle segment (4-10) | Tail (11+) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E-commerce | 97.05% | 85-92% | 40-65% | 5-20% |
| Hosting | 89.80% | 70-85% | 20-45% | 3-15% |
| EdTech | 86.55% | 65-80% | 25-50% | 5-20% |
| FinTech | 78.42% | 60-75% | 20-45% | 3-15% |
| Tourism | 77.87% | 55-70% | 15-40% | 2-12% |
What These Numbers Mean
E-commerce — the most concentrated niche. AI knows marketplaces best: Yandex.Market (97.05%), Ozon (92.41%), Wildberries (87.76%). If you work in e-commerce and your Mention Rate is below 40%, AI barely notices you. More details in the e-commerce ranking.
Hosting — Timeweb dominates with 89.80%. The gap between the leader and second player is significant. For a hosting provider, a Mention Rate of 20-30% is a normal starting point. Data in the hosting ranking.
FinTech — even the leader (Alfa-Bank, 78.42%) doesn't reach 80%. This is explained by AI's caution with financial topics — neural networks avoid definitive bank recommendations. More in the fintech ranking.
Tourism — the "longest tail" niche: dozens of aggregators, hotels, airlines. The leader's Mention Rate is below 80%, and the tail starts at just 2%. Details in the tourism ranking.
Avg Position Benchmarks by Niche
Average position — where in the list the brand appears when AI mentions it.
| Niche | Best position | Top-3 average | Middle segment | Tail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E-commerce | 1.31 | 1.5-2.5 | 3.0-5.5 | 6.0-10.0 |
| Hosting | 2.06 | 2.0-3.5 | 4.0-6.0 | 7.0-12.0 |
| FinTech | 2.44 | 2.4-3.5 | 4.0-6.0 | 7.0-10.0 |
| EdTech | 3.31 | 3.0-4.5 | 5.0-7.0 | 8.0-12.0 |
| Tourism | 2.62 | 2.5-4.0 | 4.5-7.0 | 8.0-14.0 |
What Counts as a Good Position
- Position 1.0-2.0 — elite. AI places you first or second. Among 716 brands, only Wildberries (1.31) and Timeweb (2.06) achieve this
- Position 2.0-3.5 — strong result. You're in the top 3 of an AI response
- Position 3.5-5.0 — average level. The user will see you, but after competitors
- Position 5.0+ — danger zone. The user may not read far enough to reach your brand
Share of Voice Benchmarks
Share of Voice — the brand's share of voice among all competitors in AI responses. It shows what portion of "airtime" AI gives your brand.
| Niche | Leader SoV | Top-3 average | Middle segment | Tail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E-commerce | 22-28% | 15-22% | 5-12% | 0.5-4% |
| Hosting | 20-25% | 12-18% | 4-10% | 0.5-3% |
| FinTech | 18-24% | 10-16% | 3-8% | 0.3-2% |
| EdTech | 15-20% | 8-14% | 3-7% | 0.3-2% |
| Tourism | 14-18% | 7-12% | 2-6% | 0.2-1.5% |
SoV Patterns
AI distributes voice unevenly: 3-5 leaders take 60-70% of all SoV, while the rest share the remaining 30-40%. This is important for setting KPIs — getting into the top 5 by SoV is realistic, overtaking the top three is a multi-year goal. Detailed SoV distribution analysis in the article "Who Dominates in AI Responses".
Recommendation Rate and Positive Rate Benchmarks
Recommendation Rate — how often AI directly recommends a brand. Positive Rate — the share of positive mentions.
| Niche | Best Recommendation Rate | Average Leader Positive Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Tourism | 36.6% (Aviasales) | 84% |
| E-commerce | 5.06% | 82% |
| Hosting | 2.45% | 94% |
| FinTech | 2.07% | 84% |
| EdTech | 1.26% | 63% |

Benchmarks by Business Size
Business size doesn't directly determine AI position, but it affects goal realism.
Small Business (up to 50 employees, niche product)
| Metric | Good start | Target in 6 months | Excellent result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mention Rate | 5-10% | 15-25% | 30%+ |
| Avg Position | 6.0-8.0 | 4.0-5.0 | 3.0 and below |
| SoV | 0.5-1% | 2-4% | 5%+ |
| Positive Rate | 60% | 75% | 85%+ |
Medium Business (50-500 employees, known in the niche)
| Metric | Good start | Target in 6 months | Excellent result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mention Rate | 20-35% | 40-55% | 60%+ |
| Avg Position | 4.0-6.0 | 3.0-4.0 | 2.5 and below |
| SoV | 3-6% | 7-12% | 15%+ |
| Positive Rate | 70% | 80% | 90%+ |
Large Business (500+ employees, market leader)
| Metric | Minimum (problem if lower) | Normal | Leadership |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mention Rate | 50% | 65-80% | 85%+ |
| Avg Position | 5.0 | 3.0-4.0 | 2.0 and below |
| SoV | 8% | 12-18% | 20%+ |
| Positive Rate | 70% | 80% | 90%+ |
Differences by AI Provider
Benchmarks differ significantly depending on the AI provider. You cannot compare Mention Rate in ChatGPT with Mention Rate in YandexGPT — they are different universes.
| Provider | Russian market knowledge | Leader Mention Rate | Specifics |
|---|---|---|---|
| YandexGPT | High | 85-95% | Best knowledge of Russian brands, places them first |
| Gemini | High | 80-95% | Nearly 100% coverage of leaders, stable positions |
| Google AI Mode | High | 75-90% | Correlates with SEO positions |
| Perplexity | Medium-high | 70-85% | Cites sources, high positions for leaders |
| Claude | Medium | 60-80% | Cautious with recommendations |
| DeepSeek | Medium | 55-75% | More in the DeepSeek analysis |
| Grok | Medium | 55-75% | Most generous with recommendations — Grok analysis |
| ChatGPT | Low-medium | 45-70% | Weaker knowledge of the Russian market |
How to Set KPIs Based on Benchmarks
Step 1: Determine Your Current Level
Launch monitoring on GEO Scout and record current metrics for each provider. Without a starting point, KPIs are meaningless.
Step 2: Find Your Segment
Compare current metrics with benchmarks for your niche and business size. Determine which segment you're in — leaders, middle, or tail.
Step 3: Choose Your Priority Metric
- If Mention Rate < 15% — focus on content and platform presence. KPI: Mention Rate growth
- If Mention Rate > 30% but position > 5.0 — focus on content quality and expertise. KPI: improve Avg Position
- If position < 3.0 but SoV < 5% — focus on expanding query coverage. KPI: Share of Voice growth
- If SoV > 10% but Positive Rate < 70% — focus on reputation management. KPI: Positive Rate growth
Step 4: Set Realistic Timelines
AI visibility changes more slowly than SEO. Expect:
- First results — 2-4 weeks after content publication
- Meaningful Mention Rate changes — 1-3 months
- Position shifts — 2-4 months
- SoV changes — 3-6 months
Step 5: Monitor Through the Command Center
The Command Center of GEO Scout automatically compares your metrics with competitors, tracks dynamics, and generates recommendations. Use it as your primary tool for tracking KPI progress.
Common Mistakes When Setting KPIs
Mistake 1: Comparing with the absolute leader. Setting a goal like "Mention Rate like Yandex.Market (97%)" for a medium e-commerce brand is pointless. Compare with your closest competitors, not with the absolute niche leader.
Mistake 2: One KPI for all providers. "Mention Rate 50% across all AI" is wrong. Each provider has its own benchmarks. Set separate KPIs for priority providers.
Mistake 3: Ignoring position. A Mention Rate of 60% at position 8.0 is worse than a Mention Rate of 30% at position 2.0. Position benchmarks are no less important than frequency benchmarks.
Mistake 4: Timelines that are too short. GEO is not PPC advertising. Expecting results in a week leads to disappointment. The minimum planning horizon is one quarter.
Mistake 5: Lack of daily monitoring. Benchmarks are averages. Actual metrics fluctuate daily. Without regular monitoring, you won't see trends or react to drops.
